Ultimately, the diversity of the Grant Houses community dictated the design, calling for varied zones (vegetable garden, learning center, rainwater catchment, relaxation spaces, gathering spaces). The simple placement of the planters made them easily accessible to all residents, and easily partitioned for shared use. Individual plots combine with a communal orchard, compost pile, shed, trellis, and gathering space. Flower-shaped rainwater catchment towers provide shade and connect to an underground cistern to water the garden. Residents can use the produce they grow themselves or sell it at a farmer's market under the trellis.
